Sharp Aquos Crystal Release Date, Specs: Sharp's First Smartphone in US on August 29, 2014
Japanese tech firm, known for its television sets, will soon be launching its first smartphone the Sharp Aquos Crystal for the U.S. and Japanese markets alongside Sprint and Softbank. According to latest reports, the Sharp Aquos Crystal is likely to be released on Aug. 29.
In fact, Sharp will be launching two smartphones - the Sharp Aquos Crystal and Sharp Aquos Crystal X having 5-inch and 5.5-inch display screens, respectively, and a "frameless structure coupled with crystal display." While the Sharp Aquos Crystal, a mid-range handset, is likely to be launched in the U.S., Sharp Aquos Crystal X, which is comparatively more powerful, will only be launched in Japan.
Sharp recently issued a press release revealing the specs, design and features of Sharp Aquos Crystal, which will be the Japanese firm's answer to the iPhone 6 and the iPhone Air. The specs of the Sharp Aquos Crystal includes a 5-inch 1280 x 720 edge-to-edge display, a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 8GB of internal storage, 1.5GB of RAM, a 2,040mAh battery equipped with three days of battery life, Harman-Kardon audio. The smartphone will run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
Although not much is known about the smartphone's rear-facing camera and front-facing cameras, a report by Android Police says that the sensors and camera are both located on the device's bottom bezel, which seems somewhat uncomfortable.
While the Sharp Aquos Crystal is said to be in the mid-range category, the photographs released by the press communique suggest that the premium build, as well as the non-existent bezels coupled with a metal build, and a crystal display, stand as the unique selling points of this device.
The Sharp Aquos Crystal X is unlikely to be released in the U.S, but its specs are certainly more powerful and affect the sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone Air in Japan. The specs of the Sharp Aquos Crystal X include a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 display, a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 32GB of internal memory, 2GB RAM, plus a 2,610mAh battery.
