Satanic Monument in Oklahoma State Capitol Nearly Complete; Christian Groups Outraged (PHOTOS)

At the beginning of the year a group-unveiled designs for a seven-foot tall statue of Satan they wanted erected in the Oklahoma state capitol next to a statue of the Ten Commandments, and now after raising money the group has gone ahead and built the statue.

The New York based group of Satanist had the ACLU sue against the state's capitol stating that if the state allows a statue of the Ten Commandments then they should also allow a satanic statue.

An Indiegogo campaign was then launched with a goal of $20,000, but by the time donations ended almost $30,000 had been raised.

Vice.com reported an artist trained in classical sculpture in New York was the one making the statue, crafting a Baphomet figure sitting beneath a pentagram and flanked by two children gazing upward in loyalty. When it is  completely finished, it will be cast in bronze, and the Satanists hope, eventually displayed in Oklahoma.

Baphomet is the horned goat god of pagans and Satanists. According to the group's site, the 7-foot tall statue would have "a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation."

Years ago, the Oklahoma state Legislature authorized the installment of a privately-funded Ten Commandments statue on the lawn of the Oklahoma state capitol. In the name of religious equality, the Satanic group notified the state's Capitol Preservation Commission that it wanted to donate a monument. In January the group submitted the designs.

"We believe that all monuments should be in good taste and consistent with community standards," Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the temple said in a letter to the commission. "Our proposed monument, as an homage to the historic/literary Satan, will certainly abide by these guidelines."

As of right now the state commission has put up a moratorium on the request. Commission said it wants to wait until a lawsuit over the Ten Commandments monument is settled first.

Vice reported that regardless of what happens at the statehouse, the Temple is charging ahead with the monument, and said if it does not end up in Oklahoma City the Satanists will try to find a home for the Baphomet in another state.

Greaves is not worried and stated, "There are no shortage of public locations across the US where religious monuments await a contrasting voice."
