San Francisco 49ers NFL 2015 News: Defensive Tackle Darnell Dockett Signs with Franchise

After close to 12 years with the Arizona Cardinals, defensive tackle Darnell Dockett decided to sign with Cardinal rival San Francisco 49ers.

According to a tweet sent by Dockett's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, the deal was signed Wednesday. The 49ers officially confirmed the signing shortly after. The deal Dockett signed for was for 2 years with the 49ers at roughly $7.5 million with $4 million in the first year and $2 million in the second.

Dockett told many sources that he gave the Cardinals several chances to match the deal, but the NFL veteran player and team never reached a consensus. General Manager Steve Keim for the Cardinals told sources they wanted him back. However, he also said, "After speaking with him and his representatives, we decided that this move today makes the most sense for both the team and the player and allows each to keep all of its options open."

Dockett also expressed his excitement for playing with the 49ers and the chance to play his old team twice a year. Dockett was out for the entire 2014 season after he tore his ACL during a preseason practice. Before that, Dockett had only missed two games in 10 seasons.

According to Rant Sports, since his draft to the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2004 NFL draft, Dockett posted 459 tackles, 40.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries, four interceptions and 18 defended passes. When he played in the Super Bowl XLIII, Dockett had three sacks, which tied him with Reggie White for most sacks in a Super Bowl game.

Dockett has been posting on his Twitter feed nonstop since his signing and told fans that he is looking to be the comeback player of the year, no matter what logo he wears.
