'Pacific Rim 2' Release Date, Plot Rumors: Will the New Film Be a Prequel or Sequel?

Although 'Pacific Rim' film producers have already announced a release date for the robotic-action movie sequel, 'Pacific Rim 2', not much in terms of detail has been disclosed about the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2013 blockbuster hit.

However, reports state that 'Hellboy' director Guillermo del Toro has officially confirmed that he will be coming back for the second installment to the movie franchise, while 'Pacific Rim' actors Charlie Day (Dr. Newton Geisler), Charlie Hunnam (Raleigh Becket), Max Martini (Herc Hansen), and Rinko Kikuchi (Mako Mori) are rumored to come back for the upcoming film.

Rumors previously claimed that the forthcoming second installment to the 'Pacific Rim' franchise might just be a prequel. In an interview with actor Martini with Empire, he said that he was not sure if the movie will be a prequel, but assured fans that if it was, they would be seeing Herc's family history.

Rinko Kikuchi also added fuel to the fire when she hinted that Idris Elba (Stacker Pentecost) might be coming back for the follow-up movie, even though his character died in the original film that premiered last year - sparking even more rumors about a prequel to the highly successful first film.

Despite the likelihood that the prequel rumors to be true, 'Pacific Rim' creator Del Toro himself squashed the prequel rumors by stating in his interviews that showing how it all began in the film has never really interested him. He did divulge, however, that the sequel to the action-packed robotic film will not be picking up from where the original film left of - both films will be independent of each other.

Legendary Pictures and Universal have set a 'Pacific Rim 2' premiere date for April 7, 2017.
