NBC's "The Sound of Music Live" Starring Carrie Underwood and Cast Review 2013: TV Telecast Provokes Huge Twitter Response [Video]

NBC's "The Sound of Music Live" premiered last night to a massive audience who tweeted non-stop about the performance while Carrie Underwood and the cast performed. Twitter played an integral part of the show before it even aired, when Underwood complained that she was getting "hate mail" via Twitter for starring in a role that was once held by the great Julie Andrews in the 50s.

Critics gave the live action play mediocre reviews, but most were dazzled by the sheer amount of effort that went into the performance. It was clear that Carrie Underwood and the cast of "The Sound of Music Live" worked hard and really wanted the show to be a success, almost to a fault.

Kevin Fallon from The Daily Beast wrote, "To say that Underwood was no Julie Andrews is one of life's greatest certainties, and maybe it's not fair to compare the two stars. But the truth is that millions of people tuned in Thursday night to do just that, compare Underwood to Andrews... and then throw her off an Alps cliff when she didn't measure up. Underwood's performance, however, really just underlined what a tricky role Maria is to pull off, and how astounding it is that Andrews managed to do it."

The live TV telecast was a revolutionary idea, even if the actual content in "The Sound of Music Live" wasn't stellar. Carrie Underwood along with the cast and crew set in motion a reason to do live TV events: ratings. The ratings for NBC last night were through the roof and Twitter was alight with responses to the show and hashtags galore.
