MLB Free Agent 2014 News, Rumors: Will Hanley Ramirez Sign With Boston Red Sox?

Hanley Ramírez, Dominican professional baseball shortstop, is possibly the first top MLB offseason free agent to be assigned a new team. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Boston Red Sox and Hanley Ramirez seems to have already finalized the terms of a new contract.

It is reported that the deal is to the tune of $90 million over five years. In fact, Hanley Ramirez earned $16 million in the 2014 MLB Season.

If Ramirez signs the deal with Boston Red Sox it will be a sort of home coming for the shortstop, as he will be returning to the team where he began his career. However, in 2005, Ramirez only played two games with the Boston Red Sox, and was subsequently traded to the then-Florida Marlins in the same offseason.

In the same deal, the Boston Red Sox traded Ramirez as well as three other prospects - Anibal Sanchez for Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell and Guillermo Mota.

ESPN, quoting major league sources, reports that the deal between the Red Sox and Ramirez has yet to be finalized. It also says that the deal is more than the terms that have been reported.

The website further states that while Ramirez's agent Adam Katz refused to comment, numerous Red Sox officials did not confirm the current reports.

Ramirez, who will be 31 this Dec. 23, has mainly played shortstop all throughout his 10-year career has now told teams that he is willing to make a position change.

Sources told ESPN that originally, Red Sox projected Ramirez as a fallback in case they failed to sign the switch-hitting Pablo Sandoval, who has already finalized an agreement with the Red Sox Monday. In fact, several other franchises, including San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres were also keen to sign in Pablo Sandoval. It is said that all the three teams offered him deals for five years and at least $90 million.

According to earlier reports, the Seattle Mariners as well as some other clubs were interested in Ramirez.

Ramirez played 128 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, posting OPS of .817 with 13 home runs and 14 stolen bases.
