'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9: Series Producer "Not Ruling Out Spinoff" / Final Season Premiere September 23 on CBS

For fans of How I Met Your Mother, there could be hope just yet!

Though the show is nearing the final season premiere September 23, executive producer Carter Bays has been making headlines hinting at a series spinoff. Bays recently spoke with TV Guide and teased that he's "not ruling out the possibility of a relationship-themed spinoff" of the hit CBS series.

Does that mean Marshall and Lily will have their own show?

Though Bays probably has his hands full with Season 9, the idea of a spinoff has always been on the network's hypothetical to-do list.

"We've had conversations about rewinding back to 2005 and doing a series called 'How I Met Your Father.' From the perspective of what was happening with the Mother all those years. Occasionally, she'll stumble through McLaren's and no one will see her," Bays revealed to TVLine back in 2012.

One piece of cautionary advice to the series showrunners: don't run the risk of churning out a Joey [remember the terrible spinoff to Friends that centered around likeable meat block Joey?].

Yeah of course you don't.

The How I Met Your Mother Season 9 premiere airs Monday, September 23 at 8 PM ET on CBS.
