London Tube Terror Attack Threat? Social Media Reports Labeled Hoax by British Police

A text that rapidly went viral in the UK on Sunday speculated that an imminent threat to The London Underground was underway, prompting panic among users of different social media platforms. The text claimed that all British policemen, even those on their day off, were being called out to report for duty at 4 am on Monday, allegedly due to a threat that a terrorist attack was likely to happen at the UK's iconic London Tube.

London's Metropolitan Police denied the threats and labeled the text as a hoax. In a post on Twitter, British Transport Police Chief Superintendent Paul Brogden stated that there was no truth to the rumored threats to the London Underground. Brogden's message reads, "Social media contains lots of rumours regarding threats to tube network tomorrow. There is no specific threat so keep calm & carry on. 1/2."

The text is rumored to have originated from an individual who claimed to know someone who knew someone from the British Transport police, and has swiftly spread online through various social media platforms, alarming numerous British citizens in the process.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said in a report, that the text had been circulating online since Friday, and that false information spread over social media is not uncommon.

The terror scare may have stemmed from British Home Secretary Theresa May's recent decision to raise the country's official threat level. The UK was previously under the 'substantial' alert level before it was placed on the 'severe' level, the second highest in the threat levels.

Secretary May has already clarified that the decision comes after the worsening situations in Iraq and Syria, and that there was no information that suggests an impending attack on the British soil.
