Joni Eareckson Tada to Perform at Academy Awards? Quadriplegic Christian Speaker to Sing Nominated Song 'Alone Yet Not Alone' (Video)

Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadriplegic woman whose biography was made into a 1979 Billy Graham film, could be singing live on stage at the 86th Annual Academy Awards.

The title song she sang for is an independent Christian movie titled, Alone Yet Not Alone.

The setting of the film takes place during the French and Indian War, which started in 1754 and ended in 1763.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Tada is a 64-year-old quadriplegic woman who has a self-less organization that donates wheelchairs to children in third world countries. She is a born again Christian who has her own faith based television show called Joni and Friends.

Tada grew up singing hymns despite having no specialized training, and her lung capability is just 51 percent of what it should be. It is so frail that her husband Ken was required to push on her diaphragm while she recorded the Oscar-nominated melody to give her enough inhalation to hit the high notes.

"I'm the least likely candidate to record a song for a movie, I'll tell you that up front, so it's amazing," said Tada to The Hollywood Reporter. "It's amazing enough that a family-friendly movie with a Christian theme is nominated in any category for an Academy Award. Besides The Blind Side, which was wonderful, it's just not the norm."

Tada was not personally nominated for an Oscar as the singer of the song, that honor belongs to the writers, Dennis Spiegel and Bruce Broughton. Tada understands why critics question the nomination of a film many people aren't familiar with.

"I read some of the blog posts and the negative responses, but I don't blame those people. I'd be scratching my head, too," she said. "I don't even know how this occurred. I don't know how the nomination process works, but I'm grateful. I think I give a good performance but not a great one, and I think that the Academy recognizing this humble, good little song is rather wonderful."
