'Iron Man 4' Movie Update, Cast Rumors: Robert Downey Jr. to Return If Mel Gibson Directs?

Followers of Hollywood celebrities know that veteran actors Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. are very close friends. In fact, Gibson reportedly helped Downey when the latter couldn't find work because of his alleged drug problems. Now, it's payback time for Downey, who has extended his helping hand to Gibson whose relations with Hollywood have turned sour following his reportedly anti-Semitic remarks.

According to reports, Downey finds 'Iron Man 4' as an excellent opportunity to help Gibson return to the spotlight. Although there have been several rumors regarding 'Iron Man 4', Downey has tried to patch them up saying that the prospect of 'Iron Man 4' is bleak, but he will continue to feature in other Marvel movies as the character.

Nevertheless, in October, Downey revealed to Deadline that he may possibly return as Tony Stark for 'Iron Man 4' provided the movie is directed by Gibson. When Deadline asked Downey if they were permitted to use his answer as the heading of the article on its website, the actor readily agreed and said "Why not? That movie would be bananas."

However, prior to all this, Downey talked at length regarding his friend and emphasized why Gibson doesn't require mass forgiveness for whatever he did. Elaborating further, Downey said that he was really proud of Gibson for changing his ways and simply wants to help an old friend out.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail quotes Gibson as saying, "I'm pretty good at directing... I think I got some statues for it... I think I can do it."

In addition, Gibson congratulated Downey for the arrival of his new baby girl.

In a recent interview with Mario Lopez via Extra, Gibson virtually reiterated his views on joining Marvel's 'Iron Man 4', saying, "I think I'm a better director than actor... I hope somebody gives me an argument on that."

Setting all this aside, Marvel has recently released its five-year plan, but the list of upcoming films does not include 'Iron Man 4'.
