Hell on Wheels returns to AMC for its Season 3 premiere this Saturday, August 10 with a two-hour premiere. Season 3 will start in the dead of winter 1867.

Former confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon [Anson Mount] is preparing to take over the Union Pacific Railroad, freed slave Elam Ferguson [Common] wondering if his new job might prove more perilous than slavery, and a railroad financier named Thomas "Doc" Durant [Colm Meaney], who's trying to figure out a way out of jail and back into the rail game.

Anson Mount who plays Cullen Bohannon in Hell on Wheels understood what executive producer Mark Richard was going for, filming the opening of Season 3 in the dead of winter.

"He thought it was a perfect opportunity to see the long, dark night of the soul that Cullen's likely to be going into between seasons," Mount says. "To see that encapsulated in a railroad that's been shut down for the winter, and he's the only person there - he's like, 'We can't miss this. We have to do this.'"
