'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 News: Jessica Capshaw’s Contract Extension, Arizona & Callie’s Reunion Rumors

Although ABC has renewed 'Grey's Anatomy' for just one season, the contract of actress Jessica Capshaw, who portrays the character of Arizona in the long-running medical television drama, has been extended for three years, till May 2018.

IB Times reports that earlier ABC entertainment president Paul Lee said that they hoped to air 'Grey's Anatomy' for several more seasons, as the show has been a powerful brand for the network.

Nevertheless, fans are uncertain as to how 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 will eventually shape up, as this is the first season that they will miss Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). In fact, the popular character was killed off in Season 11, following which 'Grey's Anatomy' took a time jump wherein fans saw everyone, including the lead character Meredith, endeavoring to move on in their lives.

In an earlier interview, even showrunner Shonda Rhimes admitted that 'Grey's Anatomy' was entering uncharted territory in Season 12 and that it will be interesting to watch where each character will go.

Releasing a statement to the media, Rhimes said, "Meredith and the entire 'Grey's Anatomy' family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say 'the carousel never stops turning'."

As far as Arizona is concerned, Capshaw shared in an interview with TVLine that major things will happen for her character.

According to Capshaw, in one draft of 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 11 finale script, "there was definite forward movement happening for Arizona, but it didn't quite fit" into the bigger picture. She added that nevertheless, there was evidence of "what I hope everyone is excited about, which is peaceful coexistence" for former couple Arizona and Callie, who are "moving toward a place where they can actually broach subjects that are tough for ex-wives."

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 will premiere on ABC on Thursday, Sept. 24.
