George Carlin Makes Religion Joke After Death; Despite Childhood Church's Protests Their Block was Named After Anti-Christian Comic

The late George Carlin was not only known for his comedy, but also his intense criticisms of the church and Christianity. Now, in a bizarre turn of events, a church is stuck on a block named after him.

According to the NY Times, a bill was just passed that made a two block stretch of West 121st in NYC change its name to George Carlin Way. Originally it was supposed to be one block, but was stretched to two because of a "clerical error."

The church on that block, Corpus Christi Church, had been fighting the name change because of Carlin's disagreements and outspokenness toward the church. However, it is also noted that the comedian used to attend that church as a child and even did some of his schooling there. He frequently mentioned the church in his comedy.

"He was really nurtured by the nuns there," said Carlin's daughter Kelly to the publication, "Who knows if they'll get around to amending it?"

The Times reported that a sign will not be put up with the new name by the church, and the problem will be sorted in the Fall when street name voting comes back up.

Fellow comedian Kevin Bartini thought Carlin would be "tickled" by all the confusion, as he and a panel of others fought to rename the street in honor of his friend, "I think he would have loved every moment," Bartini said.

"I feel lucky that he's from our district. He paved the way for serious artists to break taboos in legitimate ways," said Councilman Mark Levin who helped sponsor the bill.
