'Fifty Shades of Grey' Challenged by Faith Based Movie 'Old Fashioned'; Releases the Same Day and Provides a Godly Alternative (VIDEO)

The creators of the upcoming faith based film Old Fashioned, have announced that they've scheduled to release the new "chivalry is not dead" love film on the same weekend Universal debuts, Fifty Shades of Grey.

Just four days after the release of the trailer of Fifty Shades, which is set to feature several sex and bondage scenes, Freestyle will present an alternative film on the same Valentine's weekend of 2015.

"I wanted to tell a love story that takes the idea of Godly romance seriously," said Rik Swartzwelder, writer-director and lead actor in a press release, "A story that, without apology, explores the possibility of a higher standard in relationships; yet, is also fully aware of just how fragile we all are and doesn't seek to heap guilt upon those of us that have made mistakes."

"Opening the same weekend as 'Fifty Shades,' there's definitely a David v. Goliath comparison," Swartzwelder said, "They will have more screens, more money, more hype... but we're hopeful that we are not alone in our belief that there are others out there who desire more from love-and the movies-than objectification or domination."

Shot on location in rural northeastern Ohio the story in Old Fashioned follows "a former frat boy" and "a free-spirited woman" as they attempt an "'old-fashioned' courtship in contemporary America." The film's tagline is "chivalry makes a comeback."

Co-president Mark Borde stated Old Fashioned is the first faith-based theatrical release to specifically target the "under served" Christian singles audience.

Freestyle released the faith-based drama God's Not Dead that topped $60 million earlier this year, representing by far the highest gross for any Freestyle release. The Agency also helped in the marketing of Heaven is For Real.

Like Fifty Shades of Grey, the filmmakers plan to publish a novel of Old Fashioned. Tyndale House Publishers will release two books based on the film: Old Fashioned, a novelization of the screenplay written by Rene Gutteridge, and a non-fiction devotional, The Old Fashioned Way, on relationships and dating, written by Ginger Kolbaba.

Old Fashioned features Swartzwelder and Elizabeth Ann Roberts (Heroes, House, SouthlandRagamuffin, Black Knight). ??The film also stars Dorothy Silver (The Shawshank Redemption, Promised Land).
