'Farewell Michael Gungor' Attitude Toward His Controversial Views is 'Our Fault as a Church' Says Bad Christian Podcast (INTERVIEW PART 2)

Bad Christian Podcast spoke to BreatheCast about the controversy surrounding worship leader Michael Gungor's comments about the book of Genesis not being literal. They had him as a guest on their show, and shared with us what they learned about him and his opinions.

A few weeks ago, a blog post written by Gungor (months prior) began to make some noise after an article questioning his faith began to make the rounds on the Internet. In his post, Gungor stated that believing Adam and Eve and the Flood story actually happened was like believing in "Santa Claus."

BCP was accused by their listeners for not being hard enough on Gungor and for not pressing. They had just wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and speak his mind. "All we wanted to do was let people decide for themselves," said Matt Carter, of the podcast. With that thought they felt what you heard from him is what you got, you heard it in the way he spoke. BCP wanted to have a conversation as if they were hanging out.

Gungor opened with "Sure I love Jesus," and stated his belief in the Apostle's Creed. Pastor Joey Svendsen from the group pointed out that although maybe not everything he said was right, it was a good start, "Everything else is just nonessential," he said in regards to historical portions of the Bible, meaning the core of Jesus as a Savior is what is most valuable.

"Lets say Michael Gungor is completely off, completely missing the whole point, maybe even starting to turn his back on God. What is the best solution that the church could do? 'Lets put him in his place because he is a danger. Lets just blast him," Svendsen continued before mentioning the "Farewell Michael Gungor" tweet he saw on Twitter.

"He represents tons of people," Carter said, referring to a wide array of people who interpret the Bible in different ways.

"Nobody cares until they see one line in the title of an article. Then they are all up in arms, and think they know everything about this person. There's no grace," said Toby Morrell, who is also the lead vocalist of Christian rock band Emery. People have been talking about it for years, and now he said Christians have to "Throw in your two cents of judgment."

Svendsen blamed it on celebrity culture, and how people of prominence are placed on a pedestal. He said people put faith in others instead of sticking to what they believe in their hearts with God. He explained if something happens, people are let down, which is "our fault as a church."

Toby believes if Gungor was not a Christian artist and brought up topics of the Bible, "He would be a hero," but because he is part of the church he is now a villain for for opposing the teachings.

Gungor did not open up too much on his view point while being interviewed, but he would go on to make more blog posts and appear on another podcast he is part of called the Liturgists. There he would further explain what he believes about Creation and science. He also implored people to stop "using the Bible as a weapon" and to "trust Jesus."
