Family Guy Spoilers Brian Griffin Character Killed Off

Last night, cartoon comedy series Family Guy aired their most shocking episode and one of the main characters is now dead.

The family dog, Brain Griffin died last night after being tragically struck by a car and passed away from his injuries. Fox had earlier revealed that one of the characters would be put to rest on this weekend's episode, but they never revealed exactly which character it would be.

Brian Griffin played on the show for 11 years and is voiced over by the Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlene.

There's no reason as to why his character was killed off, but during the episode Brian is hit by a speeding car while crossing the road. A lengthy hospital scene shows Brian pass away surrounded by the rest of the Griffin family. Stewie Griffin was going to go back in time and prevent the accident, but he had just dismantled his time machine and was unable to save Brian's bruised and bloody body.

Family Guy executive producer Steve Callaghan told E! Online that the idea to kill off a main character "caught fire" quickly once it was pitched, and Brian seemed the least painful choice.

"It seemed more in the realm of reality that a dog would get hit by a car, than if one of the kids died," said Callaghan. "As much as we love Brian, and as much as everyone loves their pets, we felt it would be more traumatic to lose one of the kids, rather than the family pet."
