Earthquake Today: Japan Quake, 6.8 Magnitude Strikes Fukushima [MAP]

Early Saturday, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit 120 miles off the coast of Fukushima, Japan. The quake was reported to have struck some 10km below the surface of the sea. Th quake triggered a tsunami warning from the Japanese Meteorological Agency but no major tsunamis occurred.

The warning had advised people to "get out of the water and leave the coast immediately."

Later that morning, the tsunami warning was lifted and a secondary advisory was broadcasted, "Pay attention when fishing, swimming or engaging in other activities, as there may still be slight sea-level changes for the time being."

An 8-inch wave was recorded to have reached the coast of Ishinomaki Ayukawa and Ofunato at about 50 minutes after the earthquake occurred.

The earthquake has reported to have caused a single injury. A 68-year old elderly woman had broken her leg when she fell down the stairs at the time of the earthquake. The off-shore quake had shaken some buildings and alerted the nuclear plant situated nearby.

Japan has been very careful to monitor any large earthquakes that would occur near or on the mainland.

Last 2011, Japan was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake 231 miles northeast of Tokyo. The quake was the fourth largest ever recorded in the world since 1900 and was the largest in Japan. The quake produced a tsunami measuring 30-feet in height.

The combination of the earthquake and the tsunami left nearly 16,000 people dead in the aftermath with billions in damage to property. The event also triggered the nuclear crisis that occurred at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi power plant, which the tsunami and earthquake combination damaged plant, causing radioactive materials to leak and spread out.
