Downton Abbey Season 5 Cast News: More Female Roles to Shake Things Up

Three new female characters will turn the house and the fictional noble family on 'Downton Abbey' upside down in Season 5. Fans can expect to see the same type of changes that came with Season 4's new cast, Daisy Lewis who plays Sarah Bunting (Branson's new romantic interest).

On that note, Hugh Bonneville as Lord Grantham depicted how his character interfaces with Bunting. He said, "It's partly that she's left wing in her attitudes, but mainly she's just bi-rude...so there's a lot of sparring between them because she tells it like it is with an immense lack of tact and if there's one thing Robert has [learned] over the years it's tact."

Other than that, joining the crew is the Dowager Countess' new woman's housekeeper played by Sue Johnston. Her character was created because she could fight with Maggie Smith, who plays the maturing lady.

The show creator Julian Fellows said that, "I felt quite strongly that once we were having a maid she had to be a very strong character to hold her own, because obviously she would be on screen with Maggie a great deal...you don't want a shrinking violet opposite the Dowager because she'd make mincemeat of them."

The third lady who will join the cast is Anna Chancellor as Lady Anstruther. According to the Mirror, her presence will cause some strain for the good looking footman, Jimmy.

On a side note, George Clooney will also make an appearance in the series. The performing celebrity will show up in a Christmas play for charity. According to E! Online, Clooney will show up in portrayal for ITV's "Text Santa" charity. He will show up in a short play in Highclere Castle, where the series is recorded.
