Billboard Music Awards 2013 Recap: Toby Mac, Matt Redman Bringing Christian Music to Mainstream

Last night's Billboard Music Awards were filled with several familiar faces and names, including the already lauded Toby Mac. He won big in both artist and album categories, taking home the award for "Top Christian Artist" as well as the award for "Top Christian Album", with Eye On It. Mac's album sold over 60,000 copies in the first week and earned him his first number 1 single on Billboard's Top 200 chart.

Rounding out the major Christian music categories was Matt Redman's "10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)", which won the award for "Top Christian Song." The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Christian charts and has remained there for almost a year. Redman's album has also charted well, fueled mostly by the success of "10,000 Reasons." It has been immensely successful in churches as well. Redman's music has always been popular among modern evangelicals and he only takes a step forward with this album.

Among the night's biggest winners was country music crossover icon Taylor Swift, taking home artist awards for Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, and many others.  Her album "Red" also received honors, as did several of the singles from that album. Swift ended the evening with 8 major awards. Other big winners were R&B star Rihanna and Australian-based artist Gotye, with 4 awards each.

The night closed with a performance by honored pop artist Prince, who was awarded Billboard Icon Award. Prince performed a medley of his own radio hits after receiving the award. It was in recognition of his long and much lauded career that includes 10 platinum albums and 30 top 40 singles.
