'Avatar 2' Release Date, News & Update: Movie To Focus On Jake, Neytiri And Their Children

Film writer and director James Cameron has confirmed that "Avatar" will have not just one but four sequels. That means that fans of the film will get to see five "Avatar" films in the next half-century.

Before the sequels hit the big screen, the "Avatar" prequel titled "Toruk" will first take the center stage. "Toruk" is a stage production starring real-life flesh and blood humans of Cirque du Soleil and will include some of the designs that viewers will see in the upcoming "Avatar" sequels.

In his recent interview with Variety, Cameron talked about "Toruk" and how it actually resembles some of the designs in the "Avatar" films.

"We've got most of the sequel stuff already designed, but I like this idea of weaving back and forth between the two worlds, the live world and the film world," said Cameron.

Cameron also dropped some plot details of the upcoming films.

"The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It's more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans," he said.

The director confirmed that their target date of release for "Avatar 2" is on Christmas of 2018. He said that while they have not moved the initial target yet, they are open to moving it if they need to.

"The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible," he said.

"Avatar 2" is kicking off production in 2017 and is set for release in December 2018.
