'American Pie' Song News: Don McLean Sells Original Manuscript & Notes for $1.2 Million

The original manuscript of "American Pie' by Don McLean, along with his notes from the song, were recently sold for $1.2 million in New York.

Before putting it up for auction, McLean told the audience that the writing and the of the song will divulge everything there is to divulge about the song's elusive nature and meaning.

Also, he said that he wanted to put the manuscript up for auction, 43 years after the release of the song, to show that the lyrics are not just a word game.

Recorded and released in the year 1972, the song was a sensation in the '70s. The song was was a number-one US hit for four weeks in 1972 and in the UK, the single reached No. 2 on its original 1972 release.

Speaking to the Independent on the auction of the song, McLean said, "I thought it would be interesting as I reach age 70 to release this work product on the song "American Pie' so that anyone who might be interested will learn that the song was not a parlour game."

When asked what the song means, McLean said, "It means I never have to work again". Apparently, the singer has always given the same reply when asked this particular question.

In a recent interview with Christie's catalogue, McLean speaking on the elusive nature of the song, said, "Basically, in American Pie things are heading in the wrong direction. [Life] is becoming less idyllic. I don't know whether you consider that wrong or right, but it is a morality song, in a sense," according to The Guardian.
