5 of the Bible's Most Faithful and Important Moms – Mother's Day 2015

Virgin Mary

As millions of people around the world will take this weekend to reflect on Mother's Day, let's take a look at five of the Bible's most important and well known moms.

EVE
Starting chronically, Eve is not only the first mother, she is also the first woman God created. Eve has a bad rep because of her temptation from the Devil, but without her there would be no life unless otherwise created by God. She is also the first woman to have had to experience child birth. Her most well known children are Cain, Abel, and Seth. Although never referenced, Eve is believed to have had many more sons and daughters as the early world needed to be populated.

"Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living." (Genesis 3:20)

SARAH
Sarah was the loyal wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac. Out of her offspring came the nation of Israel and God's chosen people, the Jews. The most amazing part of Sarah's story is her constant faithfulness to God that he would provide her with a child. That baby boy finally came when she was 90-years-old and Abraham was 100.

"Then God said, 'Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish My Covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.'" (Genesis 17:19)

HANNAH
Hannah was the mother of the great prophet Samuel. She was barren and ridiculed endlessly for it. She remained faithful to God and fervent in prayer, and one day God sent her a son. Samuel's name means "God Hears" and because He heard her prayers, Hannah dedicated her son over to the priesthood. The loving mother kept her promise with God, and because of that she gave birth five more times. Samuel would go on to hear the voice of the Lord as well.

"And she made a vow, saying, "Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head." (1 Samuel 1:11)

ELIZABETH
Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist, the man who prepared for the coming of Jesus into ministry. Her story is another instance of being barren and of old age. However, God provided a miracle for her and her husband Zechariah. God placed a special calling on John's life and told Elizabeth to raise him up in the Lord. Elizabeth was actually a relative of Mary and the Bible describes her womb jumping for joy when learning of Mary's pregnancy.

"'The Lord has done this for me,'" she said. "'In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.'" (Luke 1:25)

MARY
Last but not least is the mother of Jesus. Mary was frowned upon by all who her knew of her pregnancy because the child did not come from her fiance Joseph. People did not believe her story of a heavenly visitor announcing she would be a virgin mother who gave birth to the Savior of the world. Mary's birth to Jesus was technically His first miracle performed. Mary's steadfast love for her son was evident from the cross until the tomb was empty.

"'But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.'" (Matthew 1:20-21)
