I wasn’t in the right mindset as I took my first listen to Misty Edwards’ sophomore release, Relentless. Scanning the tracks, as one does on an initial listen to an album, wouldn’t allow me to truly appreciate the music. However, once I was able to sit down and take a considerate listen to Relentless, my heart opened up as this worship album took me away.
Sincere lyrics of desperation and devotion are wrapped in a sound that is soothing as well as stirring, perfectly balanced. It is clear that Misty and her team are seeking an honest and well relentless encounter with God. They are willing to take us along with them. This is certainly an album worth having when you are searching for the right words to say. Lines like, “Oh Lord bless me and keep me, cause your face to shine on me, Lord be gracious lift the light of your countenance, give me peace”, and “All consuming fire, you’re our heart’s desire, living flame of love come baptize us”, can be found on the songs “All-Consuming” and “Light of Your Face”. These songs and many others will be a blessing to those who find them and are open to where they may lead.
Some of Misty’s sound seems out of the ordinary next to some of her peers, still there is something familiarly comforting about her style and it is worth welcoming. Taking a moment to really listen to Relentless proved to be worthwhile and a blessing beyond expected. I definitely recommend picking up a copy of Relentless, hoping that you find the sincere intimate moments it inspires: “You won’t relent until you have it all. My heart is yours”, as spoken on track “You Won’t Relent”.
