Todd Agnew is a simple, unruffled kind of guy. He writes about what's on his heart without posturing. He doesn't want to be pigeonholed into one sound. And he spends most of his time barefoot. Grace Like Rain, which was originally intended to be an independent project, showcases Agnew's rough-around-the-edges voice, his blues/rock sound, and his shoot-from-the-hip songwriting style. Agnew, who is a full-blooded Native American by birth, is a plainspoken songwriter, offering a mixed bag of original worship anthems, personal confessions, and counsel to anyone willing to listen about the forgiveness Jesus offers. His music has a Dave Matthews sound, with lots of guitars, keyboards, and other big sounds, which are needed to match the magnitude of Agnew's voice. As for that voice, he belts out his songs with a post-modern alt/rock grit, the kind of thing usually heard only on grunge or modern rock albums. So it's a striking contrast to hear such a big, throaty voice over simple worship melodies, most of which are acoustic. You'll come for that brawny voice. But stay for the fine words of praise in a unique package.
