Recently married in November 2007, Matt Dally was transparent as he shared in our interview before the Cross The Line Tour Concert in Chandler, AZ.
Superchic[k] has appealed to the believers as well as the unbelievers? How do you keep this appeal with out compromising or watering down the message of Jesus Christ?
I think for us we've always been a band that talks about real issues. Like issues that we've all gone through. Obviously, it comes from a Biblical backing, but since day one God has called us to edify the church but to bring non-Christians to a relationship with Christ. It's funny how God always gives us song and material. We always try to write songs, we say, like a Disney movie. There's the poppy catchiness that the kids really like but then there's the adult themes that are in there too that are really serious and heavy. So I think a lot of timesome people at first hear the catchiness of the turn and say "Aw, that's a fresh song I really like that. That's really poppy or cool. I can sing with that" And then later say, "Well what's this talking about." And that exactly what we want have a CD that kids or whoever can give to their non-Christian friends that won't be threatened by it. So the eventually they [the non-Christian] would ask what this [CD] is talking about. And that where we really feel building relationships is the key to witnessing and we want to be that tool [with our CD] that will draw the unbeliever to ask their friend questions about the CD.
If you were to locate yourself in your album Beauty from Pain. What song from your most recent album best describes where you are presently in your life?
That's tough. I think, it's so weird, because that record for the first time touched on issues that everyone from the band was dealing with. Like we all, practically, got dumped in our relationships. So for our own therapy we were writing from an honest, dark depressing place, even though there was still hope in it. Because we kept it real, people latched on to it and it blew up like crazy. And it's funny because from that record we just got done writing our new record called "Rock What You Got". We've just come from this awesome transition of writing from the deepest, darkest part of our life to understanding the whole time that God was there with you. There were that we were like "God, I don't even see you." "Like are you real?" And there were many days like that. But it's at that point where you are in that deepest darkest place where God will completely show His face to you in such a real way. Now we have that hope where no matter how horrible it is God is still with us.
And that’s kind of how we came up with "Rock What You Got." [It was inspired by] an 80 year guy who was coming out a Target store with a fresh hat on and gear and Max was like "Dude, that guy is just rocking what he's got and at that point we were like that's a song.
How much of the album "Rock What You Got" did you put into it?
Well there this guy named Max that is the visionary. But all of us bring all of our influences to the music whether it's rock n roll, hip hop, etc. We have matured in music writing. I don't think this album is going to revolutionized the world, "Like, oh, this is the new Michael Jackson's Thriller" but I do think we're shocking people. This is not just pop music anymore but there's some skill some freshness. But it's not over anyone's head. We are definitely bringing our A game to this album.
Do you like listening to your own music?
Heck, yeah, I do. Anybody who says they don't is a liar. I mean, I pump that up and turn up the radio station and say, "Hey, this is me." I've listened to the new album about 500 times now because I love it.
Superchic[k] is a compilation of many genres of music and has been compared to many bands. What music artists most influenced you?
My dad is a musician and he's also a Pastor. Growing up, my mom was all about Christian music and that's all. Then my dad would be like, "Yeah you need to listen to Christian music but come down stairs and we can listen to Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dillon, ..." My roots are all about gangsta rap and metal. Being from the Southside of Chicago it was all about the urban influences like new jack swing, pop, etc. I take all those different influences and put it into my music.
As far as creativity, there's no need to bite music. We have Jesus Christ living inside of us; access to the Creator.
We all have life to deal with and I am sure you are no different. How do your balance your life paying bills, going to church, staying connected spiritually, etc?
Well it's hard. When you first start out it's really hard because your driving your van, loading your gear, whatever. Now we have a crew, tour bus... where I can literally sit and watch ESPN all day. But I think it is hard. Like, I don't see a lot of birthdays, weddings. I don't get to experience things like your uncle or aunt just passed and you can't go. Touring is not for everybody. But for me I thrive on being able to wake up in a different city every morning and trying to figure out the landscape. I go out for a run to get a feel for my surroundings. And for me that's what I do to feel more normal.
Your tour is named "Cross the Line." What does "Cross the Line" mean?
About not being afraid to cross the line, to love people(drawing that line in the sand) whether they are Christian or Muslim and so on. It's about spreading that love. It's not just about being outside the box but running from the box.
How does Superchic[k] choose the songs for your tour?
It's funny because the songs we did live from the new album for the tour are the only songs we had ready for the tour. And when you pick new songs for the first time you don't know how the fans are going to respond. It's kinda like that awkward first date where you are unsure but the next day she calls you to say she had a great time. For this tour we chose "Cross the Line" and "Alive" for our new album. Which is high energy. "Alive" is about being alive in Christ and not just going through the day to day without settling.
How did you come to know your purpose? What is your purpose?
It's funny because my whole life I played basketball. I played baseball. I grew up in a diverse community and it was the best thing that every happened to me. I mean, I learned so much being the white kid on the basketball team. I learned so much about brotherhood about teamwork about culture. I learned so much.
I thought basketball was my purpose. My older brother was 6'3" ; was shooting like 90% and was a flawless basketball player. In middle school, I was better than my brother at the same age. I had scouts looking at me in 8th grade. Then really quickly, something switched and after my second year in High School it [basketball] just wasn't fun for me anymore. I had zero desire[to play basketball]. I realized I don't want to play basketball. I want to make music. I don't know when that transition hit, but one day I picked up a guitar and just started playing. We had practically every instrument you could have and my dad taught me the guitar. Also, my dad was a perfectionist and a great teacher and he would give me a lessons everyday. He would always check out my form, give me a record to play to and tell me to check out different styles[of music]. He challenged me to play guitar with a Dr. Dre record [for example]. He taught me that guitar players are a dime a dozen and no one wants to play bass. Son, you need to pick up that bass. And it changed my life. Then came my opportunity to be with Superchic[k]. When I started performing on stage, I knew this was my purpose. My purpose is not only to play music for the world but also, personally, to change the face of Christian music. I think so many people don't realize the behind the scenes drama and garbage that happens in this industry and that is masked behind the name of Jesus. And God told me "You can cry about it or you can change it." You can BE Christian!
Matt shared, Jeremiah 29:11 says, "God knows the plans He has for us..." and You can change lives, empower people, be content with where you are now so you can "Rock What You Got" and make the best of your present situation.
