Rebecca St. James is refuting an ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) lawsuit that claims the U.S. government is improperly funding Christian educational program Silver Ring Thing, which promotes abstinence. In a prepared statement, St. James said she believes the ACLU lawsuit reflects why sexually transmitted diseases are at an all-time high in the U.S.
"Apart from a return to God's values encouraged by programs such as Silver Ring Thing and True Love Waits," said St. James, "there is no real definitive answer in convincing young people why they should remain sexually abstinent until marriage."
St.James' own book on abstinence, Wait for Me, reached the bestsellers chart in 2004.
Silver Ring Thing (SRT), a sexual abstinence program, was created by Denny Pattyn and the Youth FORUM Southwest leadership team in 1995. The program was designed to attract the attention of the typical 21st century teenager and offer them protection from the destructive effects of America's sex obsessed culture, using sketch comedy and music videos to make the abstinence point.
