Good News
The song good news started about as quick as any songwriter could hope that one would. Late one night in November, 2004, while watching a popular conservative TV news channel, Chad was suddenly inspired to begin writing down what he was feeling. ?I literally wrote down the whole first verse of the song and most of the chorus before I could stop the pen?. The very next day, before he could start putting the words to music, Bryan Morse sat down with guitar in hand and began playing an driving melody that got the guys stomping their feet. Chad quickly grabbed the words from the night before and in a God moment, Chad?s lyrics and Bryan?s melody, conceived literally on the same night, married together so sweetly that the guys knew immediately that Good News was going to be a cool song.
With the first verse, chorus and music written out, Good News was not quite through. While on a trip to Nashville, the guys along with Jerry Glidewell, set out to tackle finishing the song. With Dave driving the bus through the Tennessee night, the second verse was almost complete when he blurted out what would prove to be the catchiest part and second hook of the song, Extra, Extra, read all about it! It was later that month when Jerry and Chad sat down in a late night writing session and pieced together the bridge and after a few hours, the song was complete and Dave, Bryan, Chad and Jerry were pleased. ?Ever since we finished it, we have been playing it live and the people always respond and really get into the song?, says Chad.
With all of the news and media exposure we have on a daily basis, we cannot forget about the simple, Good News that puts everything else into perspective. A little dose of God?s word everyday will give you all the hope and peace you need to far outweigh the abundance of bad news and hype from the world. God?s word, EXTRA, EXTRA read all about it!!!
He Speaks
One night when starting our writing session, Jerry offered that he had heard something that sparked his interest that day. He said that he was talking to some of the kids at our local boys and girls clubs and he was really trying to relate to them, like getting down on their level and using their lingo. While talking to them, one of the youngsters blurted out ?dude, he speaks our language?. So, Jerry was intrigued by this comedic moment and brought it to our writing session that night.
This was a unique time because we were writing final songs to round out the album and we were short on time. So when I heard the line, I immediately got on the guitar and began finger picking a quite tune and singing the line He speaks, la la la la, He breathes, la la la la and so on and so on. This came out very quickly and Jerry and I ran with it. So the melody was pretty easy to identify in the chorus because those words just naturally sing sp well, which led us to the echoing vocal idea, where I sing the first line and Dave answers. The tune in the verses came along that same night, which is a very introspective and thought provoking sound. The overall sound reminded me a lot of a group from the seventies, ?England Dan and John Ford Coley?. So the lyric took a little more time to finish. We really were inspired by the melody on this one, it just flows so easy that describing our God through nature was simple. True to Co3 style, we also relied heavily on a conversational lyric. One of my favorite lines is in the end of the chorus; ?so many times we miss him, if we?d only stop to listen?. As a writer, you really desire to ?pay off? your hook, so this I believe does a good job.
Overall, this song is completely inspired by the need to stop the busyness of our lives and listen to what our Father God is saying through even the smallest of things. He permeates everything, He is everywhere, in all we do, before us, after us and forever. I guess you might say, ?He speaks our language?.
Well Done
Think of Billy Graham, Charles Wesley or Martin Luther. These are men of renown, men of vision and men of God!! There lives were completely dedicated to the work of the Lord. Only God knows there hearts, but their actions are still speaking volumes to this very day. What will God say when you enter heaven and stand before Him in judgment.
Well Done is a song that simply states what we want the Lord to say to us when we see Him face to face. Think of it in terms of leaving a legacy, or what will the mark be that you make on this earth. ?If what I?m doing up here is all for myself, than I pray that it never lasts is quite a bold statement, but we live by it,? says Dave. That opening line sets up the perspective from which Chad and Dave wrote the song. ?Integrity is a real desire and ministry focus for us and our prayer is that we continue have a contrite heart and humble spirit, so as we reach new levels of ministry and success, our character will be prepared for it,? says Dave about the 2nd verse. ?For us, we both chased our own dreams for our gain and glory, not realizing that it was our destiny we were chasing,? says Chad, ?but we came to fully understand that God will share His glory with no man.?
That is really the meaning of this song and the bridge really sums that up as the guys sing about Jesus being the ultimate gift and how God must have received Him back into heaven after the resurrection and ascension. Well Done, my good and faithful servant.
