By Grassrootsmusic When we hurt, and people say they “know where we’re coming from”, we laugh at the irony as we believe that to be impossible. All the more, when we think of Punk Rock stars, we know they could not understand heartache, loneliness, and learned helplessness. This may have been true, until now. With raw honesty, determined passion and heart-felt lyrical biography, the members of Superchic[k] reflect on a year of losing the comfort, love, and security of long-term relationships. With every member of the band facing a break-up of a serious relationship during the production of the CD, one would assume, as with most bands, that they would wallow in melancholy lyrics, play minor chords and leave the listener in mellow reflection. One glance at the song list of Beauty From Pain and one realizes Superchic[k]’s gusto is too much for resignation. Standing up and dusting off, Superchic[k] starts their CD with an energetic, electric guitar rompin’ anthem to the “ones who don’t give up”. From start to finish, Beauty from Pain faces hardship head-on and with a variety of addictive (I listened to “We Live” eight times today), jump-around, pick-me up songs mixed with slower, self-empowering ballads of hope. With Christ as their foundation, their “soul is at ease” (“Pure”) as they “try to stay strong” (“Stories”). After recognizing their heartache in “Wishes,” the tone changes to hope as they truly extract Beauty from Pain. -- Christopher Cutter
