By Tom Lennie , Goldusa.com/i> It's surely in part due to their Brit-pop sensibilities, part to the success of their numerous Greenbelt UK festival appearances, but since the release of their self-titled debut in 1996, US group All Star United quickly became as popular in Britain as over their own side of the pond! Certainly they've had their ups and downs in recent years, but now with an almost totally new line-up, and following productive inroads into the mainstream gig-circuit, the All Stars are back with a stunner of a new disc! Though now in his early 30's (and recently married!), band founder, lead singer and main song-writer Ian Eskelin is still bounding with youthful energy and fresh creativity. One listen to tunes like 'We are the future', 'Let it rain' and the thoroughly enticing 'Revolution' and you know that this team has lost none of the melodic quirkiness of their early radio-friendly hits. Plenty of variety here as well; some tongue-in-cheek humour attending the frantic thrust of 'Weirdo', a touch of honky-tonk on the appealing 'You can count on me', etc. But through it all, a greater depth of meaning pervades this winsome set, with most songs being directly spiritual - and personal - in content, and cuts like 'Sweet Jesus' and 'Making it beautiful' being endued with sincere and thoughtful passion. Produced by Eskelin and guitar wizard / co-song-writer Richard Evenlind, these sounds were appropriately mixed in London's Konk Studios (owned by Ray Davies of The Kinks, one of many 60's influences on the band). And while the set lasts a rather meagre 30 minutes, not a moment of this is wasted - it's gripping, melodious genius all the way. Get on board folks - it's time for a Revolution !
