 News, The Myriad - Interview
The Myriad
What do you get when 5 Seattle-based musicians come together and fuse melodic filled lyrics with talent? The Myriad! Their music has already been compared to the likes of The Verve, Radiohead and The Who and is now a top contender for the title of "MTV2 Dew Circuit Breakout." Out of more than 4,000 bands that entered the contest in the US, they are now in the semi-finals as 1 of the 6 finalists. The Top 3 Finalists will be flown to New York City to perform during the Dew Circuit Breakout Finale, LIVE from Times Square, where the grand prize winner will be announced.

Having just recently released a six-song EP, the band is currently on a sold-out nationwide Remedy Tour with David Crowder Band and Phil Wickham. We caught up with them at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.

The Myriad is made up of Jeremy Edwardson (vocals, guitars), John Roger Schofield (bass), Steven Tracy (guitars, keys), Jonathan Young (guitars) and Randy Miller (drums).

This is my first time that I am seeing you guys perform live, but I've heard your performances on stage are awesome. How do you prepare up before a concert.
Band: Lots of stretches. (All laugh) Each one does something different. I think the best nights are when we all get together and we encourage each other and we prepare mentally and get in a huddle and do the whole band thing, those are the best nights. Even though we all live in these cramped quarters, it doesn't necessarily mean that we always see each other. So before a concert, its great to just check in with each other be like "Hey, how is everyone doing?" I think that's when can all say "I'm doing great, Oh, I'm feeling a little sick today", or "I'm doing excellent". It's a good time to convene before we hit the stage.

Do you write your own songs? Is it just one of you guys, or everyone together?
Yeah, we write it altogether.

How has the Remedy tour been going with DCB and Phil Wickham?
Band: It's been a blast, it's amazing! We've gone to the best venues across the US that we could possibly imagine playing at. It's been packed out. A lot of good people in the bands we performing with and good people that have been coming out to the show. It's been the best tour that we have ever been on.

If you talk to the other bands, like David Crowder Band, we all say this tour has been awesome by hang time. The hang times have been awesome, where the bands and the crew, we all just get together and it's been like one big happy family from day one.

Is it your first performing with the David Crowder Band?
Band: We played a few festivals with David Crowder Band and Phil Wickham, but we never connected with them. So actually the first time that we all met was in Wacko, Texas, David Crowder's hometown. And we had a big Texas barbeque before we hit the road and that's where we met them all for the first time.

What have been the most memorable moments throughout the tour?
Band: The great beautiful venues like tonight (Hammerstein Ballroom), they have been really gorgeous. I also remember when we were leaving San Francisco, driving through the beautiful bay area by the Wharf over Golden Gate Bridge and listening to The Killers and listening to Phil Wickham rock to The Killers, singing along on the bus as we drove. That was fun. Phil has some moves!

Congrats! You guys are in the Top 6 contenders for the title of "MTV2 Dew Circuit Breakout."! That's awesome. How has it been?
Band: Yeah, everything has been pushed back, the announcement date is December 15th
Voting takes place now till December 15th and they will announce the band that have the most votes from now until then. And the top 3 bands will actually perform here in Times Square, New York City. So hopefully, we will be back here in a month.

I saw the self interview thing you guys did on YouTube, that was very clever in getting people to know about The Myriad and vote for you on MTV. Who's idea was it?
Band: We just brainstormed together about what would be interesting to watch. And that is just what came out of everyone's ideas. It was an idea that was stacked upon another idea and then expounded upon by another one.

After your "You Can't Trust a Ladder" album in 2005, you have an album coming out next year. What are your plans after that?
Band: It's all about that album. It's coming out March 4th next year. We actually released a six-song EP title Prelude to Arrows it came out October 9th. And everything we are doing now is just kind of building momentum towards March 4th. The EP is sort of like a sneak peak what is to come. The upcoming record is called With Arrows, With Poise. We have been pretty much all year long in studio recording that record and all of energies have been funneling towards that date. So that's where we are heading, it's kind of like the "end of the world" for The Myriad.

What advice to have for all breathcast.com aspiring musicians?
Band: Listen to a lot of music and pump your fists in the air! And wear denim! (John looks down at his corduroy pants) Oh no! (All laugh)
